The President of the Republic of Serbia
Tomislav Nikolic
June 3, 2014
BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has declared open an exhibition titled"Serbian Literature and the Great War"at the Belgrade City Library, underscoring that historical data alone cannot make the suffering of the Serbian people in World War I resonate more deeply with today's generations.
That is why this exhibition is important for citizens to have a full grasp of that period in history, Nikolic said at the opening of the exhibition on Monday [June 2, 2014].
This is the story that the authors the Belgrade City Library brought together are telling to us and their descendants.
The exhibition has been authored by Olga Krasic and Marjan Marinkovic, with an aim of showing the specificities of Serbian literature in the period between 1914 and 1918 and presenting the most significant writers whose life was marked by the war, and their works that deal with the Great War.
The exhibition comprises three units, the first one encompassing 17 display posters that present the Serbian authors who wrote about World War I as contemporaries, during the conflict.
A special emphasis has been placed on the works created by Serbian authors in Bizerte.
The second unit offers an overview of the Serbian literature through periodicals that were issued in Serbia, Croatia, Greece and France during the war.
Besides the display posters, this unit also includes the copies of WWI periodicals from the collections belonging to the Library and the Serbian Bibliophile Society.
The third unit presents the originals of rare books published during, as well as immediately before and after the Great War.
