Aleksandra's Note:The Serbian Chetnik movement was born in 1903 during the final decades of Turkish Ottoman Empire rule in the Balkans. Its founder was Vojin Popovic, known as Voyvoda Vuk. These special "armed rebel bands" were called "komiti" (Turkish) or "Cheta" (Serbian) from which originated the name "Chetniks".  The role of the Chetniks was to defend and protect the Serbian Orthodox Christians under the control of the Turkish Ottoman Empire (Moslems) in the Serbian lands. During the period of the Balkan Wars in 1912 and 1913 and the First World War 1914-1918, the Chetniks established the basic structure of the military volunteer movement, which contributed greatly to the victory of the Christian Serbians over the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent withdrawal of the Turks from the Serbian lands.

The Chetniks became legendary guerrilla forces and their honorable history is one of true patriotism - love and loyalty for their people and their homeland.
