Greetings!
On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, the City Council's Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards unanimously adopted the Ordinance granting Landmark status to the Daniel O. Hill House at 448 W Barry Ave, better known as our DOM - home of the Serbian American community in Chicago. The decision was based on the architectural, cultural and historical significance of our Lakeview gem.
For those who were unable to attend, I have enclosed a copy of my speech below.
Thank you for your love and support.
Sincerely,
Martina Marković Bertsch, PhD

Good morning, distinguished members of the Committee.
Thank you for the opportunity to speak in support of the Landmark designation for this architectural, historical and cultural gem in the heart of Lakeview, currently the home of Serbian American Museum St Sava.
I could tell you about our stunning American four-square mansion, boasting Prairie and Beaux-Arts details. About its Architect, Frederick Wainwright Perkins, one of the design leaders of Chicago’s renaissance following the Great Fire.
I could tell you about its tremendous significance to members of the Serbian American community of Chicago. Purchased in 1952 by seven local families, it was gifted to the Serbian Cultural Club St. Sava. For 66 years, we delighted in the music, plays and movies from our homeland; took in exhibits, lectures and conferences. The first and only Serbian American Theater "Mira Sremčević" was founded here 15 years ago.
I could tell you about its prominent leaders. Its founder, Dr. Slobodan M. Draskovic, was a notable author, law and economics scholar, and political activist. Mr. George Vujnovich was a true American hero and Bronze Star recipient, who led Operation Halyard, the joint U.S. - Serbian rescue of 512 wounded and trapped U.S. airmen from Nazi-occupied Serbia in 1944.
I could tell you the Serbian American community understands that by asking you to recognize our treasured building as a Chicago Landmark, we assume the responsibility to maintain it in good repair. Indeed, our community is willing and able to support the museum. 13 Serbian American contractors committed to complete the required upgrades. The estimated cost is approx. $100,000; 85% will be in the form of pro bono labor and donated materials, and we will cover the rest from donations.
But perhaps the most important aspect of declaring our legacy building a Landmark: it would be a tremendous win for the international community of Chicago. It would be about protecting the values we hold dear today: diversity and inclusion. About showing our community’s strength and unity in proudly preserving our heritage.
Dr. Martina Bertsch, on behalf of the Council of Serbian American Organizations.
